Michael Hochgeschwender. Der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg. München: C.H. Beck, 2010.

ISBN: 978-3-406-56251-8

Against the Grain: Reading Pynchon’s Counternarratives. Amsterdam and New York: Rodopi, 2010.

atg_smallAgainst the Grain: Reading Pynchon’s Counternarratives is the first book that critically addresses Thomas Pynchon’s novel Against the Day, published in 2006. The nineteen essays collected in this volume employ a large variety of approaches to this massive novel and also take it as an opportunity to reevaluate Pynchon’s earlier works, analyzing Against the Day in relation to V., The Crying of Lot 49, Gravity’s Rainbow, Vineland, Mason & Dixon, as well as Pynchon’s short stories and essays. The authors—younger and established scholars from eleven countries—address these works with regard to issues of modernism and postmodernism, politics, popular culture, concepts of space and time, visuality, sexuality, identity, media and communication, philosophy, religion, American and global (literary) history, physics, mathematics, economics, and many more. Their insights are as profound as they are diverse, and all provide fresh views on Pynchon’s fiction that will be useful, fascinating and entertaining for researchers and fans alike.

This volume includes essays by Hanjo Berressem, Ali Chetwynd, William D. Clarke, Francisco Collado-Rodríguez, Inger H. Dalsgaard, Simon de Bourcier, Lovorka Gruić Grmuša, Leyla Haferkamp, Michael Harris, Heinz Ickstadt, Jessica Lawson, Clément Lévy, Georgios Maragos, Manlio Della Marca, Keith O’Neill, Sascha Pöhlmann, Toon Staes, Rodney Taveira, and Celia Wallhead. Sascha Pöhlmann. Pynchon's Postnational Imagination. Heidelberg: Universitätsverlag Winter, 2010.

pöhlmann ppiPynchon’s Postnational Imagination is the first monograph to critically analyze Thomas Pynchon’s novels with regard to issues of nations, nationality, national identity, nationalism, and the very idea of the national: nation-ness. It argues that Pynchon’s fiction can best be conceptualized as postnational, that is, as working towards dismantling the hegemony of nation-ness as a metanarrative. The study seeks to establish a critical theory of postnationalism that helps conceptualize this complex literary practice. It combines established theories of nation-ness with recent attempts to think beyond the nation, drawing on the ideas of Renan, Gellner and Anderson as well as Habermas, Albrow, Appadurai, and Hardt and Negri in order to offer a viable postnational theory that is as pertinent to literary studies as to other fields. It presents various postnational strategies, most notably that of parageography, to show in detailed critical readings of Gravity’s Rainbow (1973) and Mason & Dixon (1997) that Pynchon’s novels both exemplify and describe a postnational imagination.

Anna Maria Flügge. James Ellroy and the Novel of Obsession. Trier: WVT, 2010.

fluegge_ellroyThis book offers a new approach to the fiction of James Ellroy. His novels thematize obsession to the extent that it not only affects the behavior of the protagonist but the very structure of the novel itself. The book claims that Ellroy’s novels establish a new genre, labeled the "novel of obsession." It argues that Ellroy takes the novel to new extremes in the course of his writing career. In doing so, he follows a tradition in American literature that can be traced back to the nineteenth century, especially to Romanticism, and finds frequent expression in the twentieth century, in novels such as West's Miss Lonelyhearts, Nabokov's Lolita, and Don DeLillo's White Noise, all of which are examined in detail in this book. The study also takes a fresh look at the history of genre theory from Aristotle to structuralism and deconstruction.

Christof Mauch und Christian Pfister, Hg. Natural Disasters, Cultural Responses: Case Studies Toward a Global Environmental History. Lanham, MD: Lexington Books, 2009.

ISBN: 978-0739124161

mauch_disastersThis volume demonstrates that natural catastrophes – earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, etc. – have exercised a vast impact on humans throughout history and in almost every part of the world. It argues that human attitudes toward catastrophes have changed over time. Surprisingly, this has not necessarily led to a reduction of exposure or risk. The organization of the book resembles a journey around the globe – from Europe to North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and from the Pacific through South America and Mexico to the United States. While natural disasters appear everywhere on the globe, different cultures, societies, and nations have adopted specific styles for coping with disaster. Indeed, how humans deal with catastrophes depends largely on social and cultural patterns, values, religious belief systems, political institutions, and economic structures. The roles that catastrophes play in society and the meanings they are given vary from one region to the next; they differ – and this is one of the principal arguments of this book – from one cultural, political, and geographic space to the next. The essays collected here help us to understand not only how people in different times throughout history have learned to cope with disaster but also how humans in different parts of the world have developed specific cultural, social, and technological strategies for doing so.

Klaus Benesch and Meike Zwingenberger, eds. Scientific Cultures - Technological Challenges: A Transatlantic Perspective. Heidelberg: Winter, 2009.

Scientific CulturesIn 12 original essays highly reputed scholars from both the United States and Europe take a fresh look at the plurality of contemporary scientific cultures and their respective methodologies and discursive practices. While some investigate recent advancements in science and technology and their repercussions in the social and political field, others discuss new approaches, especially in the humanities, that may help to reconnect what C.P. Snow famously called the “two cultures” and open up new perspectives for ‘cross-cultural’ fertilization. Contributors also probe the regulatory political and institutional mechanisms that determine the public success and representation of specific scientific cultures, particularly with respect to scientific ethics, to the frequently invoked ideal of ‘objectivity’ and the alleged cultural disinterestedness of the sciences.

Christof Mauch und Thomas Zeller, Hg. The World Beyond the Windshield: Roads and Landscapes in the United States and Europe. Ohio University Press 2008.

ISBN: 9780821417683

mauch_windshieldThe World beyond the Windshield: Roads and Landscapes in the United States and Europe is the first systematic, comparative look at the landscapes we view through a car's windshield. By looking at examples from the United States and Europe, the chapters in this volume explore the relationship between the road and the landscape that it traverses, cuts through, defines, despoils, and enhances. The authors analyze the Washington Beltway and the Blue Ridge Parkway, as well as iconic roads in Italy, Nazi Germany, East Germany, and Great Britain. This is a story of the transatlantic exchange of ideas about environment and technology and of the national and nationalistic appropriations of such landscaping.

Christof Mauch und Thomas Zeller, Hg. Rivers in History: Perspectives on Waterways in Europe and North America. University of Pittsburgh Press 2008.

ISBN: 978-0822959885

mauch_riversThroughout history, rivers have run a wide course through human temporal and spiritual experience. They have demarcated mythological worlds, framed the cradle of Western civilization, and served as physical and psychological boundaries among nations. Rivers have become a crux of transportation, industry, and commerce. They have been loved as nurturing providers, nationalist symbols, and the source of romantic lore but also loathed as sites of conflict and natural disaster. Rivers in History presents one of the first comparative histories of rivers on the continents of Europe and North America in the modern age. The contributors examine the impact of rivers on humans and, conversely, the impact of humans on rivers. They view this dynamic relationship through political, cultural, industrial, social, and ecological perspectives in national and transnational settings. As integral sources of food and water, local and international transportation, recreation, and aesthetic beauty, rivers have dictated where cities have risen, and in times of flooding, drought, and war, where they've fallen. Modern Western civilizations have sought to control rivers by channeling them for irrigation, raising and lowering them in canal systems, and damming them for power generation. Contributors analyze the regional, national, and international politicization of rivers, the use and treatment of waterways in urban versus rural environments, and the increasing role of international commissions in ecological and commercial legislation for the protection of river resources. Case studies include the Seine in Paris, the Mississippi, the Volga, the Rhine, and the rivers of Pittsburgh. Rivers in History is a broad environmental history of waterways that makes a major contribution to the study, preservation, and continued sustainability of rivers as vital lifelines of Western culture.

Ursula Prutsch. Creating Good Neighbors? Die USA und Lateinamerika im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Nelson Rockefeller’s Office of Inter-American Affairs (1940-1946). Stuttgart: Franz Steiner Verlag 2008.

Britta Waldschmidt-Nelson. Gegenspieler: Martin Luther King - Malcolm X. Frankfurt a. M.: Fischer Verlag, 5. Auflage 2007.

ISBN: 978-3596146628

King and XMartin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X stand out as the two main "heroes" of the struggle for black equality in the 20th century. King has become the icon of peaceful integration and his ideal of a color-blind society is still shared by most Americans as the best way to overcome racial problems. In recent years, however, the more radical positions of Malcolm X have become increasingly popular within the black community, especially among urban black youth. This comparative biography, written for a German audience, traces the roots of Martin's and Malcolm's personal development and their political agenda within the larger context of the African American freedom struggle. It discusses their accomplishments and failures as well as their political and cultural legacy, especially with regard to the question of black identity and race relations in the United States today.

Ulla Haselstein und Klaus Benesch, Hg. The Power and Politics of the Aesthetic in American Culture. Heidelberg: Winter, 2007.

ISBN: 978-3-8253-5336-0

aesthetic1While the ubiquity of the aesthetic in contemporary society can hardly be denied, the reasons for the staggering aestheticizing of private and social practices are manifold and have recently been subject to controversial debates within the humanities. Arguably, postmodern consumer culture, new hedonistic lifestyles, or the spectacularization of the political sphere are just another form of Americanization, yet the specific 'American' dimension of these phenomena often remains blurry. As the essays collected here show, to simply conflate the aestheticization of everyday life with an American consumerist ideology predicated on packaging and surfaces largely disregards the complex and tangled history of the aesthetic in Western cultures.
In this volume, seven eminent literary and cultural historians from both Europe and the United States discuss the power and politics of the aesthetic in American culture (and elsewhere) with respect to multicultural diversity, fashion, the visual arts, aesthetic theory, the politics of race and sexuality, and, finally, America's response to the 9/11 attacks on New York.

Astrid Böger und Christof Decker, Hg. "Transatlantic Perspectives on American Visual Culture". Amerikastudien/American Studies 52.1 (2007).

AmerikastudienThis collection of essays on American visual culture addresses the theoretical, historical, and methodological challenges that are connected with the analysis of visuality in different media and historical contexts. By focusing on American visual culture in a transatlantic perspective, one of the concerns is the question of how the study of visual culture can be pursued in a transcultural and transnational sense. Historically, painters, photographers, and film directors travelled extensively between Europe and North America learning, refining, or revising their individual approaches and skills, while the 20th century has witnessed an increasingly global impact of American visual culture. Concentrating on painting but also taking into account other important areas of visual culture such as photography, graphic arts, film, and television, the essays examine, in a variety of periods and constellations, which creative encounters took place.

ISBN: 978-3506713674

Europe and America: Cultures in Translation. Heidelberg: Winter, 2006.

ISBN: 3-8253-5258-7

Cultures in TranslationTransatlantic relations seem to be slowly recovering from an unprecedented rift caused by conflict over Iraq and other issues. Even so, this transatlantic divide both between governments and within societies in Europe and America stretches far beyond international politics into the realm of culture. Anti-Americanism is still visible in Europe, as are accusations of cultural imperialism, but at the same time American popular culture is as successful as ever. While European and American affairs remain closely intertwined, their future relationship thus appears uncertain. Is the United States Europe’s Other and vice versa?

In this volume, experts from several academic disciplines examine the state of affairs from various angles. The articles focus on political norms and philosophical ideas, the significance of religion, Anti-Americanism, the impact of immigration and ethnicity, the role of art and literature, as well as the concepts of transnationalism and creolization. This study offers some new insights and hopes to promote further debate on the many fascinating aspects of the transatlantic dialogue.

Markus Hünemörder. The Society of the Cincinnati: Conspiracy and Distrust in Early America. New York: Berghahn Books, 2006.

ISBN: 978-1-84545-107-3

huenemoerdersocIn 1783, the officers of the Continental Army created the Society of the Cincinnati. This veterans’ organization was founded in order to preserve the memory of the revolutionary struggle and pursue the officers' common interest in outstanding pay and pensions. Henry Knox and Frederick Steuben were the society's chief organizers; George Washington himself served as president. Soon, however, a widely distributed pamphlet by Aedanus Burke of South Carolina accused the Society of conspiracy. According to Burke, the Society of the Cincinnati was nothing less than a hereditary nobility which would subvert American republicanism into aristocracy. Soon, more critics including John Adams and Elbridge Gerry joined the fray, claiming among other things that the Society was a secret government for the United States or a puppet of the French monarchy. While these accusations were unjustified, they played an important role in the difficult political debates of the 1780s, including the efforts to revise the Articles of Confederation. This books explores why a part of the revolutionary leadership accused another of subversion in the “critical period,” and how the political culture of the times predisposed many leading Americans to think of the Cincinnati as a conspiracy.

Adolf Cluss, Architect: From Germany To America. New York: Berghahn Books, 2005.

ISBN: 978-1845450526

mauch_adolf_clussPublished in conjunction with a 2005-2006 exhibition at the Charles Sumner School Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Stadtarchiv Heilbronn in Germany, this volume discusses the life and work of Cluss (1825-1905), a German-born architect, civil engineer, and urban planner. His buildings stand in Washington DC, and the impact of his ideas continues.
Major scholars in the field place Cluss’s life and career in a historical context. Their essays are enhanced by many previously unpublished illustrations drawn from years of research. A photo essay at the center of the book vividly illustrates Washington in Cluss’s time, Cluss’s contribution to Washington, and the fate of Cluss’s buildings and city

Ulla Haselstein und Berndt Ostendorf, Hg. Cultural Interactions: Fifty Years of American Studies in Germany. Heidelberg, Winter, 2005.

ISBN:3-8253-5079-7

Cultural InteractionsThe present volume celebrates the 50th anniversary of the German Association of American Studies. It is testimony to 50 years of academic scholarship in Germany. The retrospective occurs at a crucial moment in transatlantic relations marked by the end of the Cold War and a noticeable realignment of American cultural politics in a globalizing, transnational world.

The first section is devoted to memories of the beginnings of American Studies after the war; returnees and local renegades from English, History or Politics began mapping out the field between these competing disciplines, as Ursula Brumm and Reinhard Doerries record in vivid detail. The second section addresses moral and political perspectives of globalization; marshalling Immanuel Kant and Hannah Arendt, Seyla Benhabib places transatlantic negotiations between the twin poles of hospitality and sovereignty: Erna Brodber argues for a Caribbean cultural space with Marcus Garvey's impact on the US; Michael Kammen records the contacts and collusions between history and neighboring disciplines contributing to American Studies. Workshops were devoted to the postwar efforts to transcend the limits of Old World traditions and to establish a German perspective in American Studies.

The interdisciplinary approach was reflected by topics such as the impact of the Frankfurt school on the formation of German American Studies; American hegemony in a globalized world; American policies of immigration;the impact of American popular culture; new aesthetic forms in the US. A fair cross-section of research interests and practices of American Studies in Germany is represented by workshop contributors Ilka Saal, Ulf Schulenburg, Nicole Waller, Jochen Achilles, Herbert Grabes, Michaela Giesenkirchen, Sieglinde Lemke, Knud Krakau, Andreas Paulus, Ina Bergmann, Gabriele Linke, Rainer Schnoor, and Michael Dreyer.

Klaus Benesch und Kerstin Schmidt, Hg. Space in America: Theory-History-Culture. Amsterdam: Rodopi, 2005.

ISBN: 9-04201-876-3

benesch_spaceAmerica's sense of space has always been tied to what Hayden White called the "narrativization" of real events. If the awe-inspiring manifestations of nature in America (Niagara Falls, Virginia's Natural Bridge, the Grand Canyon, etc.) were often used as a foil for projecting utopian visions and idealizations of the nation's exceptional place among the nations of the world, the rapid technological progress and its concomitant appropriation of natural spaces served equally well, as David Nye argues, to promote the dominant cultural idiom of exploration and conquest. From the beginning, American attitudes towards space were thus utterly contradictory if not paradoxical; a paradox that scholars tried to capture in such hybrid concepts as the "middle landscape" (Leo Marx), an "engineered New Earth" (Cecelia Tichi), or the "technological sublime" (David Nye). Not only was America's concept of space paradoxical, it has always also been a contested terrain, a site of con- tinuous social and cultural conflict. Many foundational issues in American history (the dislocation of Native and African Americans, the geo-political implications of nation-building, immigration and transmigration, the increasing division and "clustering" of contemporary American society, etc.) involve differing ideals and notions of space. Quite literally, space and its various ideological appropriations formed the arena where America's search for identity (national, political, cultural) has been staged. If American democracy, as Frederick Jackson Turner claimed, "is born of free land," then its history may well be defined as the history of the fierce struggles to gain and maintain power over both the geographical, social and political spaces of America and its concomitant narratives. The number and range of topics, interests, and critical approaches of the essays gathered here open up exciting new avenues of inquiry into the tangled, contentious relations of space in America.

ISBN: 9780521841177

mauch_berlin_washThis collection examines the urban spaces of Berlin and Washington and provides a comparative cultural history of two eminent nation-states in the modern era. Each of the cities has assumed, at times, a mythical quality and they have been seen as collective symbols, with ambitions and contradictions that mirror the nation-states they represent. Such issues stand in the centre of this volume. The authors ask what these two capitals have meant for the nation and explore the relations between architecture, political ideas, and social reality. Topics range from Thomas Jefferson's ideas about the new capital of the United States to the creation of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin, from nineteenth-century visitors to small-town Washington to the protesters of the 1968 student movement in West Berlin. This lively collection of essays speaks to audiences as diverse as historians, urban sociologists, architects and readers interested in cultural studies.

Kerstin Schmidt. The Theater of Transformation: Postmodernism in American Drama. Amsterdam: Editions Rodopi, 2005.

ISBN: 9-04201-895-X

schmidt_theaterThe Theater of Transformation: Postmodernism in American Drama offers a fresh and innovative reading of the contemporary experimental American theater scene and navigates through the contested and contentious relationship between postmodernism and contemporary drama. This book addresses gender and class as well as racial issues in the context of a theoretical discussion of dramatic texts, textuality, and performance. Transformation is contemporary drama’s answer to the questions of postmodernism and a major technique in the development of a postmodern language for the stage. In order to demonstrate the multi-faceted nature of the postmodern theater of transformation, this study draws on a wide range of plays: from early experimental plays of the 1960s by Jean-Claude van Itallie, through feminist plays by Megan Terry and Rochelle Owens to more recent drama by the African-American playwright Suzan-Lori Parks.

The Theater of Transformation: Postmodernism in American Drama is written for anyone interested in contemporary American drama and theater as well as in postmodernism and contemporary literary theory. It appeals even more broadly to a readership intrigued by the ubiquitous aspects of popular culture, by feminism and ethnicity, and by issues pertaining to the so-called ‘society of spectacle’ and the study of contemporary media.

Genevieve Fabre und Klaus Benesch, Hg. African Diasporas in the New and Old Worlds: Consciousness and Imagination. Amsterdam: Editions Rodopi, 2004.

ISBN: 9-04200-880-6

benesch_diasporaIn the humanities, the term ‘diaspora’ recently emerged as a promising and powerful heuristic concept. It challenged traditional ways of thinking and invited reconsiderations of theoretical assumptions about the unfolding of cross-cultural and multi-ethnic societies, about power relations, frontiers and boundaries, about cultural transmission, communication and translation. The present collection of essays by renowned writers and scholars addresses these issues and helps to ground the ongoing debate about the African diaspora in a more solid theoretical framework. Part I is dedicated to a general discussion of the concept of African diaspora, its origins and historical development; Part II examines the complex cultural dimensions of African diasporas in relation to significant sites and figures, including the modes and modalities of creative expression from the perspective of both artists/writers and their audiences; finally, Part III focusses on the resources (collections and archives) and iconographies that are available today. As most authors argue, the African diaspora should not be seen merely as a historical phenomenon, but also as an idea or ideology and an object of representation. By exploring this new ground, the essays assembled here provide important new insights for scholars in American and African-American Studies, Cultural Studies, Ethnic Studies, and African Studies. The collection is rounded off by an annotated listing of black autobiographies.

Klaus Benesch, John-K Adams, und Kerstin Schmidt, Hg. The Sea and the American Imagination. Tübingen: Stauffenburg Verlag, 2004.

ISBN: 3-86057-347-0

benesch_seaIn American literary and cultural studies, the lasting influence of the sea on the American imagination is well recognized. If America, as Giles Gunn has recently claimed, was more invented than discovered, then the ideas and language that Europeans have used to recreate their initial encounter with the “New World” appears to be heavily indebted to their seagoing experience, an experience that preceded the actual “landings” or “arrivals” in America. From Christopher Columbus’s writings on his first voyage to the West Indies (1493) to Sir Walter Raleigh’s The Discovery of Guiana (1595), Richard Hakluyt’s The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation (1598-1600) and John Winthrop’s programmatic A Modell of Christian Charity (1630), which was drawn up in the midst of the hazardous passage itself, the sea and its perils, promises, and traditional mythical connotations has figured prominently in the imagination of the early explorers of America. While later Americans seem to have been preoccupied with conquering and settling the “wilderness” that stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, the imagery of the sea—either as natural boundary to their westward movement or as foil for their variegated cultural, philosophic, and political projections—has never actually lost its hold on the American mind. Just consider the numerous seafaring stories that appeared during the time of the American Renaissance, when Americans were trying to define their own idea of what could count as a national literature, thereby slowly weaning themselves from the ongoing cultural dominance of Europe. What is more, if we look at the cultural, political and economic context from which seafaring parables appeared, such as Melville’s Moby Dick and Benito Cereno or Poe’s Arthur Gordon Pym, we find that 19th century America—its rapid industrialization notwithstanding—was still a nation that depended heavily on the sea and its assumed unlimited resources. In the early nineteenth century, New Englanders, according to historian Nathanial Philbrick, “didn’t invest in bonds or the stock market, but rather in whaleships.” And if we move to the South, we find that while the slave trade had been legally banned for some time, the entire system of plantation slavery in the Southern states could not have thrived without the triangular pattern of the transatlantic trafficking in know-how (e.g., West African rice planting technology in the Carolinas), human cargo (slaves) and later, the product of their enforced labor (sugar, molasses, rum, cotton). As the postcolonial concepts of the “middle passage” and the “Black Atlantic” readily suggest, the sea has had an equally important impact on the imagination of people of color in the Americas, even if their understanding of the “New World” was never one of mythical homecoming but rather, as one of rejection, disaster, and catastrophe, or as Malcolm X put it, “we didn’t land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us.” Today, scholars of the sea in American cultural and literary history are themselves confronted with a “wave” of recently published texts that stand in need to be charted and explored. Because of encyclopedic publications such as Haskell Springer’s (ed.) America and the Sea: A Literary History (Athens: U of Georgia P, 1995), we will focus on individual authors and themes. Although the topic of America and the sea should be seen in the broadest sense—from Native American water myths to the politics of seashore environmentalism— we decided that in our approach to the topic we will concentrate on a number of classic American writers and the way in which they have commented upon, questioned or reinforced the intricate links between American and the sea.

Christof Mauch, Hg. Nature in German History. New York/Oxford: Berghahn Books, 2004.

ISBN: 9781571814388

mauch_natureGermany is a key test case for the burgeoning field of environmental history; in no other country has the landscape been so thoroughly politicized throughout its past as in Germany, and in no other country have ideas of 'nature' figured so centrally in notions of national identity. The essays collected in this volume – the first collection on the subject in either English or German – place discussions of nature and the human relationship with nature in their political contexts. Taken together, they trace the gradual shift from a confident belief in humanity's ability to tame and manipulate the natural realm to the Umweltbewusstsein driving the contemporary conservation movement. Nature in German History also documents efforts to reshape the natural realm in keeping with ideological beliefs – such as the Romantic exultation of 'the wild' and the Nazis' attempts to eliminate 'foreign' flora and fauna – as well as the ways in which political issues have repeatedly been transformed into discussions of the environment in Germany.

Christof Decker. Hollywoods kritischer Blick. Das soziale Melodrama in der amerikanischen Kultur 1840-1950. Frankfurt: Campus, 2003.

ISBN: 3-593-37356-4

Jahrhundert liefert.

Klaus Benesch. Romantic Cyborgs: Authorship and Technology in the American Renaissance. Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 2002.

ISBN: 1-55849-323-9

benesch_cyborgLiterary critics have long regarded the rejection of technology as a distinguishing feature of American Romanticism. Yet as Klaus Benesch shows in this insightful study, the attitude of antebellum writers toward the advent of the machine age was far more complicated than often supposed. Although fraught with tension, the relationship between professional authorship and evolving technology reflected a pattern of adjustment rather than opposition, as writers sought to redefine their place within a culture that increasingly valued the engineer and the scientist. According to Benesch, major writers such as Emerson, Hawthorne, Melville, Poe, Whitman, and Rebecca Harding Davis recognized technology as a powerful engine of social change - a driving force that threatened to subordinate their creative faculties to the inexorable dictates of industrial production. In response, they conjured up "cybernetic" self-representations that attempted to preserve the autonomy of the individual in the face of ongoing technological encroachment. These biomechanical images helped writers construct a hybrid identity that reconciled new modes of technological production with older, more organic models of professional writing. In the end, Benesch argues, Romantic literary discourse is marked as much by admiration for the technological as by strains of resentment and cultural anxiety about its negative effects. As such, it prefigures in important and previously unacknowledged ways the modernist and postmodernist sensibilities that would follow.
