Prof. Dr. Christof Mauch initially published his book Paradise Blues: Reisen in die Natur und die Geschichte der USA in German in 2022. Now, it has also been translated into English.
Paradise Blues is an unconventional history of the United States of America, an unusual travel guide that follows and renders visible the country’s paths of nature, history and civilisation. Christof Mauch is a leading German historian who has spent many years in the US and in this book he attempts, from a European perspective, to grasp the diversity of American culture and the transformation of its environments, combining travel reporting with nature writing, personal observation and philosophical reflection. Mauch seeks the familiar in unfamiliar places and the curious in places that seem common and well-known.

The interplay of text and performance in the theater is a vital arena of experimentation as well as contestation. Without question, the matter is not new and has preoccupied drama, theater, and performance theory to a veritable degree. Today, the issue remains central to conversations about new practices of staging, contemporary playwriting, and our underlying frameworks of critical thinking, especially in the context of an era in which scholars increasingly address the alleged end of the avant-garde (Savran; Schechner). This focus issue continues the ongoing conversation by examining and foregrounding how dramatic texts are employed, staged, and materialized in recent productions on European and US American stages. The articles examine how performances yield new meanings of a play or displace, recontextualize, or amplify classical and ossified interpretations of dramatic texts. They reflect a move beyond normative presumptions of fidelity or correspondence as they document the complex relations of text and performance, language and body, story and mise-en-scène.

Seit mehr als hundert Jahren prägt das US-amerikanische Kino die globale Filmkultur mit populären Genres, Stars und stilbildenden Filmen, aber auch mit einer Industrie, die Talente aus aller Welt anzieht. Wie in früheren Dekaden der Filmgeschichte unterliegt die Industrie aufgrund technologischer und kultureller Entwicklungen seit der Jahrtausendwende einem grundlegenden Wandel. Streamingdienste sind ernstzunehmende Konkurrenten geworden, die Corona-Pandemie hat die Kinos wirtschaftlich getroffen, und die MeToo-Debatte verstärkt das Drängen auf Diversität und Gleichberechtigung. Auch das gesellschaftliche Umfeld mit Umwelt-, Finanz- und Demokratiekrisen ist komplexer geworden.
Das Buch untersucht in einzelnen Studien die Geschichte, Ästhetik und Theorie des US-amerikanischen Films. Es präsentiert zunächst einen historischen Überblick und vertieft ausgewählte Aspekte zu fiktionalen und dokumentarischen Formen. Dazu gehören Fragen der Performativität im klassischen Hollywood-Kino ebenso wie Aspekte der Literaturadaption, Motive der Reflexivität im New Hollywood Cinema oder die Diskussion über die Ethik des Dokumentarischen. Die Studien richten sich an ein breites Publikum und können sowohl zum Einstieg als auch zur Vertiefung genutzt werden.
