“Mom says, all soldiers come back different…” Veterans and Homecoming in Hollywood Films since World War II

We kindly invite you to the guest talk of Dr. Andreas Etges (LMU University) on Thu, 15.06.2023, 2-4pm, in S007 (Schellingstr.3)

09.06.2023

World War II has been described as the “good war,” fought by the “Greatest Generation.” But this war too created massive readjustment problems, both for the veterans, many of whom returned with physical and/or emotional wounds, and for their families and American society in general. Between 1944 and 1946 this was discussed in newspapers and magazines and was addressed in a number of Hollywood films with a lot of candor: problems inside families and among friends, with fellow workers and the public, physical and emotional wounds, adultery, alcoholism, and nightmares, unemployment, and racial discrimination. This talk will discuss the individual wounds and the national trauma of readjustment especially in movies about the Second World War, but will make some comparisons to films about the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq.

This guest talk held by Dr. Andreas Etges is part of the lecture series "Crises-Wars-Environments" (convener: Prof. Dr. Christof Mauch).
